Thunderbird Pickup musings....

Sign in to disble this ad
So I'm thinking of swapping the PU's in my epi Thunderbird to Darkstars, and Then I wondered, has anyone tried switching in Jazz style pickups or Musicman? I don't think I've seen that done, do you think it would give it a more articulate sound rather than the super super low's of the thunderbird?

I'd quite like to have an overall brighter sound, and I know the wood and everything plays a bigger part in this, surley there must be a way to change the sound? Was also thinking of changing the neck to a Fender style - ala Ox. Think that would change the tone much?

FWIW:

Don't have the bass but I have the pups and they aren't dark. They're quite balanced clear sounding pups - my sleeper pup find as a matter of fact.

Have no idea what's in the bass electronics but have you run them straight to the jack to see what the pups themselves sound like in the bass (skipping the electronics). I've got an acoustical range of basses including an acoustically dark soundng bass and they're darker in that bass but still not dark sounding pups. Maybe Epi's used different pups but I've only seen ones that look like mine.

If nothing else you could simply throw a cap in the bass to make it as bright as you want.

I also wouldn't stretch it to say the wood makes a bigger difference than the pups in a bass, especially in this case. Some rigs no matter what you play through it will sound pretty much the same regardless of the bass or pups but it takes some serious coloration - which happens with some pups as well (like the Alembics I've got).

Thank you very much for your suggestions, I'm gonna try wiring straight to the jack, see what happens.

It's always a good idea to run a pup straight to the jack before replacement cause some pups sound a lot different with nothing degrading the signal.

Also forgot to mention there's my review of them in Dimento's soapbar pup experiment. May possibly be in J pup (singles) experiment). Don't remember.

Also I'm supposed to have a Dark Star headed this way so I should have a review on that in the next couple weeks.
