Time to start modding my sx

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought an sx spj about two years ago, slapped on some flatwounds and have been more than happy ever since. In the last couple weeks I have been noticing some hum when the J pup is on at all. Part of the modding I plan to do is some decent grounding and shielding to help with that. Here's where the fun starts.

I'm thinking I want to change out the pups. I was thinking about grabbing some GFS pups to replace the stock ones. I want to keep the P for sure, but I have been considering routing out the J and installing a big MM style hb, with the bottom coil of the HB as close to the position of the J-pup as possible. Decent idea or should I just rock a J pup?

Another thing I have been thinking about is the controls. I would like to upgrade the pots and wiring, but probably keep v/v/t or maybe have a stacked tone knob w/ bass and treble cut ala some G&L bases. either way I want the controls to be quality and more than just usable. I want the controls to add to the instrument, not just be there, if that makes any sense.

Any help would be great, thanks in advance!

Get mini pots... It's super tight in there w/ full sized pots. If you want to do a stacked pot, you might need to do some routing.
