Question Tip for a P/J Squier

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all.

I have a 2002 Squier Precision which has a P neck pickup and a J bridge one. I really like its sound but I would like to upgrade its electronics, as I am going to make some other changes, but I don't find what I'm looking for. I hope you help me.

I love the way it sounds mixing 70% P-30% J. IMO it sounds great for hard rock (the style I play the most), as it gives me a "classic" sound. The main problem is that I hit very softly the strings (bad manners that appear when you learn on your own ), and I would like to have louder pickups to counteract it.

Any recommendation? I prefer passive pickups. I have seen some packs, which come with both pickups, and they seem nice, but I don't mind if your idea is using different brand/type/whatever in each pickup.

Thanks in advance

Check out Wizard Thumper pickups or Seymour Deuncan Quarter Pounders.

+1 for the Quarter Pounders- good tone and lots of grunt.

Thanks for the info. I am pretty sure now about P pickup: Duncan's Quarter Pound SPB-3. However, I would like to know the diference between this one and the Duncan's Hot SPB-2.

So now, my main problem is to decide about the J pickup. Symour Duncan has 2 interesting models, but both have issues that do not convince me:
Hot STK-J2: They are designed to work as a humbucker (bridge and neck), but I would only be using the bridge one. In other thread, somebody said this was a little bit noisy without the neck one.
Vintage SJB-1: This one looks better, but I am afraid about the "moderate output" label. Will it be eclipsed by the quarter pounder?

Any other sugerence is welcome

I also strongly recommend the DP126.. I recently upgraded to these and have been VERY happy with the output. With some nice nickel wounds they sound outstanding

Sometimed squier pickups are odd sizes.
The sound isnt bad just not loud. Try a mxr micro amp as a boost.

If you want your sound but louder you have to turn up your amp. A louder pickup will not compensate for a soft hand technique. You don't have to play harder because you will be louder but because it sounds different. If you want to be louder turn up your amp and if you want to sound better work on your right hand technique. If you don't like your sound you could get some different pickups but to me it sounds like you'd be better of just working on your technique and maybe get some new strings if you don't like your sound.

If you do want to change the pickups try to get a loud jazz pickup to match the quarterpounder in output.

Mmmm, you are making me changing my mind to DiMarzios . However, do you know where can I hear any clip where they are being used?

Also, I will measure my pickups tomorrow and check there is no problem with that. Thank you for all your opinions.

Thought I'd post this. I just ordered a set of DP126s from Music123. Use code 15off4u and they're $85 shipped.

I didnīt find the measures of the DiMarzio pickups. I would be very pleased if any of you could tell me.

About the offer, the code does not seem to work. Anyway, the price is quite good. The problem is that I live in Spain, and if I have to pay the shipping and the taxes, it gets really expensive. I might check them at my local store.

I have a few PJs, and the ballsiest, most articulate sounding one has Bart Ps and a Quarter Pounder J on the bridge (all passive). To die for..mmmmm
