Toaster problems

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, after 30 something years of playing my '73 4001 without any major problems I may have a problem with the toaster pup.

The volume I get from it has dropped to about half the output of the treble pup, and it was always louder than the treble pup in the past (I don't have the capacitor on the treble pup either so there is more volume out of that than a standard 4001).

I'm just about to dive in there to see what the issue is, hopefully it's just some crud on the selector switch, a dirty pot or a dry joint or something, but I suppose that there is always a chance that after 36 years some of the pup windings may have lost their enamel and shorted somewhere.

What impedance (or resistance) should I be getting? I seem to remember about 7K but I could be wrong

It sounds like a dirty switch or pots. Check the solder joints as well.

The resistance varied between 7 and 8k.

I seem to remember that my two '74 4001's toasters read about 8.2k.

Mine were also louder than the treble p'up, until I removed the cap. Then they were fairly even.

I replaced the one treble pickup with a Bartolini Hi-A, and I replaced the other bass' treble pickup with the left over toaster from the first bass, since I had also replaced the neck pickup.

The two toasters sounded pretty cool.
