Tone Cap questions

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have been building a fretted companion to my Squier VM fretless jazz, and put some Duncan Designed pickups in an older Affinity body that I have been sprucing up. I noticed the tone cap was wired wrong in the Affinity (it sat between the tone and the jack!) so I figured I would replace the crap Squier cap with an orange drop I already had:

http://www.guitarfetish.com/047uf-Sp...le_p_1157.html

The tone knob works properly, but now it is hyper bright. I mean really, very bright. I can dial the tone back by about 40-50% and then it matches the tone of the VM fretless.

I verified that it is a .047u cap.

Is the OEM Squier cap that horrible, or did I do something wrong that created this incredible boost in brightness?

Thanks,

-STS

It sounds like the cap is still in series with your output, so it is essentially blocking the lows and passing only the highs to the jack. Normally the cap passes the highs to ground through the tone pot.

Hmmmm . . . .

I used this as my wiring diagram:

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support...=std_jazz_bass

I'm at work and not at my bass right now, but IIRC, the lows were still going through just fine, it's just the highs are very pronounced.

So if you think it's in series with the rest of the wiring, how would I solve that? Would I not have the solder point on the top of the pot share the same solder as the bridge ground and sleeve?

I'm modding my Squier CV 60s P bass too, entire look and entire inside ... bourns pots .. switchcraft jack ... orange drop cap (0.047uf) was my decision, if You want any specific frequency cut I advice You to check this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I62Xfhts9k

It will help You decide on a value that works for You or maybe ( like me ) will make You desire the option of having more than one cap in Your bass ...

Cool. Thanks for that link, ill have a look later.
Mines arriving tomorrow but im pretty certain im going to put a linear pot in for volume and a .047uf drop cap to start with. what i dont understand is the different versions/voltages of this cap.

I would like to mod the look but dont think ill spend too much on this bass. I can live with the Fiesta red (i hope) but i might put my CV Jazz neck on it as im not that good with P necks.

Good luck with your mods, are you going to post any shots of the work?

I'll post them (after/before) once I have the mods done, the parts are stuck in the border being revised by the "aduana" .. so i'm in waiting mode ....

About the voltages .. thats not a real problem, since basses has low voltage ... no matter if You use 400v or 600v version, they will work the same, just make sure to get the sprague type, I just got one of 600v that is hughe ... so I'll see if I don't have troubles making it fit in the cavity ... other than that the function is the same .. in an amp the voltage would be critical.

In the look I'm adding white pearloid pickguard, pickup cover, I'll place the thumbrest in the top not in the bottom .. and I'll put Lollars for pickups.

BTW ... the CV P 60s neck is the same as the jazz bass .. so don't worry about the swap, is not necessary ..

Thanks for the reply, thats a big help.

I look forward to seeing and following the upgrades.

Someone else said the necks were the same but on the Squier website they state they have different widths. it would be fantastic if they are the same.

STS, sorry for hijacking your thread.
