Tone Cap value for 60's Jazz?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,

I just got my SD Antiquity II's (Jazz/Jive) that I plan to put in my Schecter Diamond Series J bass, I'm trying to go for that classic 60's Jazz tone that bled into so many 70's hits plus I'm just lovin' the feel of the Schecter. I don't plan to do the true original stacked pots just the usual V/V/T. Can I get away with a .047 pf cap like I used in my MIM P bass? I read somewhere that I need a .050 pf cap. Will .003 pf really make that much of a difference? I still have a .047 "Orange Drop" extra laying around that I could use. If the .050 is essential does anyone know a good source for these and an exact mfg. and part #? I'm not a real electronics wiz by any stretch.

Also, any suggestions on sheilding/grounding the cavity, (copper tape or conductive paint) should I do the copper or brass surface (visible) conductive tape strip from the bridge p/u to the bridge like some of the old Fenders?

It would be cool to see Mr. Tallent playing his 58 Dan Electro Long Horn at the Super Bowl "BOSS 1/2 time show" tonight!

Thanks again,

Play On!

Everything I've read says a .050uf cap, but it shouldn't make much of a difference using a .047uf cap.

The Fender website used to have all the wiring schemes posted-- check it out.

Here's the schematic from Fender.

You should just rewire it to be exactly the same, and you should swap all of your pots out for 250k pots (if they aren't already).

  1. Make sure you use the right value pots for the pickups. Just because traditionally Fenders had a certain value doesnt mean your pickups will need the same. Check with the manufacturer.
  2. Use a 'vintage' capacitor such as a oil and paper http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RS-Guitarworks...|39:1|240:1318

Are you speak engrish?

No, 0.03uf won't give you any audible difference. You can probably see it with an analyzer, but you won't hear it.
