Tone capacitor help?

Hey guys. I'm adding a custom "Dark" button to my jazz bass. This will work the same as a tone knob, but on a on/off scale rather than 0-10 scale.

Anyway, I was planning on using a 0.47uf cap, but I only have a pack of 0.22uf caps.

I would wire two together to create a 0.44uf (basically a 0.47) but would I wire them together in parallel or series? Thanks.

You parallel them to double the capacitance.

So if I wired two caps in parallell, a .047 and a .023, then my total capacitance would be in the area of approximately .070? And I wouldn't have to drive all the way in to Radio Shack to get that .068 cap that I need?

Correct. In fact, depending on tolerance, you might be exactly at .068 uF after wiring them up.

Tone capacitor help?

When you wire the switch, have it short a 500K or 1 Meg resistor in series with the capacitor - equivalent to instantly changing from "10" to "0" on a potentiometer. Doing so will avoid pops when you switch. If you make/break the circuit to the capacitor you may often get a pop when you switch.

You could also combine your switching idea with a standard tone control to shift the response of the tone control. Doing so would shift from a more mid-rangy funk sound to a deeper darker sound.
