Tone Difference Between Millennium 4 and 5 AC BXP

Sign in to disble this ad
I have both and Peavey Millenium 4 (Black Violet), and 5 (Gloss Black) AC BXP. For some weird reason, they both sound entirely different. The 4 is more punchy and the 5, is quiet, and more mid sounding. I bought the 4 from Musicians Friend, and the 5 from Peavey, since it's the only place I could find it in Gloss Black. The strings on the 5 are pretty new, as well as the four, and both have new batteries in them. I'm thinking since I bought them from two different places that's the problem, but if both have the same pre-amp and electronics, then I'm not so sure. Anyone else have an idea about this? Thanks.

I learned a long time ago, that no two instruments sound exactly the same. That's why it's almost always better to play an instrument before you buy it...even if you know that you want a particular model. Even with higher priced instruments, there are inconsistencies. Of course, that means that you can occasionally find a real gem, even in a "budget" instrument.

By the way, I'm a big Peavey Bass fan...I have 3.

At this point, I'm considering sending back the 5er, but I'm not too sure about Peavey's return policy. I've only had for about 3 weeks now. Any idea about what they do about returns?

I'm not sure about their return policy. Have you tried using an EQ pedal to adjust for the difference. I bet you can get fairly close to the other one with a little trial and error.

Your four & fiver are both the 5 knob AC version of the Millennium BXP? Interesting...

I have found what you describe to be the case with most 5 strings I have played. The greater mass of the neck and bridge, who knows ? To me there is a "mushiness" to the tone that just doesn't match up with the character of a four. Of course, as always, YMMV.
