Tone Difference between Split and Quad Coil Pickups

I'm considering putting Bartolini P4 type pickups in a six string MTD Kingston bass. Can anyone explain to me the tone difference between Split and Quad coil pickups (is it like the difference between a P and a J)? Also how do the CB series pickups compare? Any info or opinions are much appreciated. Thanks!
