Tone knob ineffective

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, my tone knob on my p-bass copy doesn't really do much until the last 1/8 of a turn, in which it cuts all the treble. I want to be able to get tones in between. It is a A500k pot, which I'm pretty sure means its a audio taper pot. Which cap should I switch too to get my knob to work usefully?

you want a linear taper pot. audio taper pots have curved... tapers so that most of the action is happening in the first and last eighth of the turn. a linear taper has a straight taper, so that every little turn of the pot is useful in adjusting your tone.

i wish my brain were switched on so i could give a better more technical responce. sorry.

I have a B100k, which I think is linear taper. It's a fretless P, so I think this might work. B is linear taper, right?

EDIT: I just looked inside the bass, and the volume pot is a B500k, and the tone A500k. Could I switch these around?

While ive heard that, ive always stuck audio taper pots in for the tone.

And by curved, you mean its an exponential, not linear change in resistance

Anyone know? Should I switch the pots around, so that the tone is linear and the volume audio taper?

EDIT: just figured out that the 104J printed on the tone cap means it is a .1 uF cap, which is what I want. I still want the tone knob to have a gradual change in tone though, not an all on or all off tone knob. Anybody know how to fix this?

Go with a 250k linear taper. The lower value will give you a smoother more noticeable tone change.

So I want linear for tone? Would an audio taper work with volume?
