Geez it would take a really really bad pickup to be considered worse than Duncan Designed.

yeah, that would be a "sideways-grade" at best.

I like them..
Sound very similar to a SD Basslines "vintage" PU to me..
A lot better than MIM to my ears..IMO
Pretty hot ...and accentuates the highs and kind of "scooped"

IMHO, a great example why not to upgrade.

"Duncan Designed" means they're based on duncan's design and built by someone else... often in korea, taiwan, etc etc etc. In other words, they're not 'real' duncans. Some like them, some don't.

Which can be said for about every pickup out there. Whether you should upgrade or not depends entirely on your personal taste which no one can predict. Especially on a web forum.

They shouldn't be, IMO. According to SD, the line was developed for OEM use in instruments that cost less than $800, while the regular Duncans are designed for instruments over $800. The Duncan Designed are made in Korea instead of the US, but are have the same design as their more expensive brothers.

I've had guitars with DD pups in them. The humbuckers are outstanding. I've also found the bass pups to be excellent quality as well.

I'd save for better pickups. You'll always be wondering "what if....?"

Still like 'em better than MIM's...
If you want more low-end and mids go with something like the SD "hot" .

i didnt care for them to much. They lacked alot of low end to me. When I switched over the SPB-2 basslines it was a huge difference.

i dont want to buy new ones. i already have a SD quarter pounder in my VM squier, but i have this MIM p bass that sounds muddy and brightless, so i maybe if i put the duncan designed pup that came with the squier it would improve the sound
i`ll try if i learn how to solder

Go for it - I bought an MIA Fender P to replace my VM - and I think the VM sounds better, which is probably down to the pickup. The only reason they get bashed is because you can't buy em separately and only come with Squier basses. I bet most people dissing them have never even tried them!

I agree. I have both the fretted and fretless VM's and i love them both. I am sure there are better pickups out there (isn't there always something better?), but I really like the sound I am getting with these ones.

Good Luck!

FWIW, I have a set in my Squier jazz, and dislike them. It's possible to own or have tried something and dislike it

bingo!, i think i said that before, its a quite muddy sound, not bad, but it needs more attack + when i play with a pick it sounds clanky and not punchy, the squier sounded great with the duncan desiged and sounds even better with the quarter pounder

sorry if you dont understand my english
