Various questions on a Dimarzio P-J install

Sign in to disble this ad
Most of my pickup experience to date has involved J or HB pickups, so I'm going to break down and ask all of the questions I can before I start putting things together.

Pickups are:
Dimarzio Model J (DP123) and Model P (DP122)

Bass is:
Kawai with 4 control holes to fill

1) Does it matter what the P pickup orientation is in the bass?
There are 2 halves, 1 with green and white, the other red and black. I know what the wiring should be, but does it matter which side goes where? And what about rotation? Dumb questions, but I want to know for sure.

2) A series/parallel switch for the P pickup: Yea or nay?

I was thinking it may be a good hole filler, as well as something that could balance the pickup signals a bit better. But I've heard mixed reviews. Thoughts?

3) If I wanted to have the pickups run series/parallel (both P and J), could I also use a 3 way selector switch for them?
Let's say I want to have the pickups selected via 3 way mini toggle... but also have a series/parallel switch to boost the punch. Can it be done and if so, how?

I think that's all. Any more and I'll post them, but any help is appreciated.

1. No.

2. I wouldn't do it, but I believe that pickup may be voiced to sound better than most in parallel. Though, on the other hand, that might be just the quad-coil Split P pickup.

3. Sure. Use a 3PDT mini toggle for the series/parallel switch, to bypass the pickup selector switch in series mode.

I had series parallel switches on my fretless PJ bass with DiMarzios for both pickups. If you like modern tones, it's a nice option, as it brightens up the tone. It's also cool when you have both pickups on, as switching one into parallel changes the way they blend.

Even though the true sound of a P pickup is in series, a lot of people like EMG P pickups, and they are wired in parallel. It's a brighter tone with less mids.

It currently has EMGs in it. Wanted to see how passive sounded with the bass.
