For $30, why not just buy that one?

Ah, so you are the world's fastest human solderer ; }

Anyway, I figure the knowledge and experimentation behind a product are part of the value, as well as the parts and build.

Hmmm, $30 to me sounded cheap and $6 in parts sounds unreasonably low but I don't know what goes in one and never tried making one up. Fact is I was tempted to buy one at that price - and to check out this guys stuff (which I still may do).

Regardless, I forgot to mention firebottle (google search firebottle) probably has one their site but even knowing the site it may take you an hour to find it. Which brings up another issue - what's your time worth.

Is it really a Varitone circuit with only caps involved? The ones I saw and the one I made also did bandpass and high-pass, as did the original Gibson circuits if I recall correctly.

Not a techhead but this looks like it's probably the real deal with the coils (along the lines of the band pass greenboy mentioned).

I'm not seeing any choke there. That's just coil-tapping with a switch for it added. Here, look at these and read a somewhat clueful description of what's going on at the provided links (other variations have been used in guitars, as well):

Yeah. Gibson has a past that's had a lot of innovation conducted under or for the name. Not wise to disregard that history if you have interest in, say, pickups ; }

Yep, products made here are fading like the ice caps. Pretty tough to innovate when you don't make noth'n.
