Varitone wiring issues.

Sign in to disble this ad
So I bought one of those ready made Varitone control plates on ebay for my j a while back. The vol/blend/tone with the bypass toggle. Its ok. No soldering, just lugs. Following the diagram that came with it, I installed it with a new set of Fralins. Individually the pups sound pretty good, but when I try and 'blend' them(ha!) they just sound weak and pathetic. This may be a simple mistake in the harness wiring or a mistake on my end. Could any body tell me what could cause this?

You might need to reverse both leads from one pickup.

+1.

It sounds like your pickups are simply out of phase from each other, causing certain frequencies to cancel each other out resulting in a thin sound.

As GlennW said, reverse the wires on one of the pickups.
