Very happy with EMG!
I've had a new bass built and we put a pair of active EMG T-Bird pups in. Initially the wiring was set up for vol - vol - passive tone. Right off the bat the bass sounded awesome. These pickups are very aggressive. I wouldn't use them for all styles, but I'm using this bass in a prog band and playing very Entwistle type lines. This is an attack bass. A lead bass with serious balls.
But I couldn't leave it alone. EMG is so smart. They sell modular upgrades. So I sprang for the active balance control and the EXB bass expander tone mod.
First, it took me half an hour to put the new mods in. Another smart EMG move is that they make the components modular. No soldering. All the wires are included. The most difficult part of the mod was finding room for the second battery. Got it all in and plugged in and it worked perfectly the first time.
I haven't had a chance to do much experimenting with the EXB tone, but at first listen it does what it's advertised to do. Mids are scooped and hi/low is boosted at one end. Hi/lo cut and mid boost at the other end. The T-Bird pickups are mid-rangy pickups, so the scoop and boost is exactly what I want.
Very happy. Big shout-out to EMG!
