Hey all.

I'm kinda in pannic right now. I got a gig next monday and my 1992 musiman stingray 5 just stop working. At the begining, I was suspecting that my battery was dead but this is not the case because I just changed it and the bass isn't working. Even if I crank the volume to maximum, I hear a little little noise( like if the battery was dead but it's not the case!)

Do you think the pick up could be dead?

Thanks,
Ben.

Could it be the amp is turned down on the Master? Or on the Volume?

If you changed the battery and the bass is still mute the only think I could suggest you is: Take the bass to a good repairman.

If youre adept at it, try replacing the IC on the preamp. Ive seen them go out a couple of times

For Bassman822 :What's the IC??

And javier69 : I bought the musicman 800$ two years ago. This bass is pure diamond.

Do not replace any ICs (or any other component for that matter). It isn't even a wild guess and makes no sense.

It is almost impossible for any person to remotely pinpoint the source of the problem without checking the preamp out first. Or your only hope would be to find person who actually had the exact same problem. I would start with wires and loose connections though.

+1
basic electronics troubleshooting tells us to look first at things that move, and things that get hot. the IC in that bass does neither.

check the connections from the battery clip to the rest of the circuit, and also check the wires hooked to the jack.

I agree--the first thing I'd suspect in that situation is that either the battery clip or one of the wires from the battery or the jack was loose or damaged, since it sounds very much like the preamp is just not getting any power.

sheesh, not one of you suggested the obvious thing to check first... like trying another lead between the bass and the amp...

Not that it necessarily applies to this situation, but since the MM pickup is passive, if it was an emergency to get through a gig before it could get repaired, the pickup could be wired directly to the output jack. Again, just a measure to "get through the night," not a permanent or even long term temporary fix. But taking it to a good repair person is always a good idea.

One common problem I experienced is that the soldering is broken in the input jack. If you put your bass away without unjacking, it's causing the cable to twist. That twist is somethimes conveyed to the input jack and causing movements and friction at the solder pins. If that's the problem it's a quick fix to solder the jack

Had the same problem with my Sterling. Check the solder on the back of the battery compartment. Mine had come lose after many years of opening and closing it.
