Villex Pup Q ??

Sign in to disble this ad
I wasn't happy with stock pups in my 80's Hammer Scarab. I replaced them with DiMarzios. They sounded much better and provide an incredble growly, distorted rock tone, especially through a tube amp. I don't find that I really care for the sound through my LMII. I love the neck and fretboard on the Scarab and don't mind spending money on it to really make it work the way I want. Several people have suggested the Villex P/J set but there are two jazz pup choices. One is a single coil, the other is a linear humbucker I would prefer more clarity over distortion, maybe a bit of zing from the jazz pup to mix in with the P pup. Any thoughts on which J pup in the P/J set would be best??? Also any thoughts on the Villex pups overall?? Finally, I might as well order the mid range booster along with the pup set?? I can't really get much from the one sound clip on their website

Thanks in advance.

Hi Knifemaker,

There is no tonal difference between Villex humbucker J pup and Villex single coil J pup. Getting a humbucking J pickup in a P/J set means paying slightly higher price to eliminate hum completely.

Thanks!!

I appreciate the info. I love my Hammer and don't mind sinking money into it. I'll spend the extra bucks for the humbucker!!

I am not shy to admit that Villex pickups rank very high for me (the highest in fact). i've Villex-ed some basses and every time it looks that another one will follow the Villex touch (next bass receiving a pair of Villex pickups will be put under the knife in the next 1-2 months). The sonic posibilities of the mid-control and tone pot allow for a wide range of solid sounds. If you add the booster in the equation as well then you are really into a pallete of very diverse sounds (the output is not shy at all, but the booster gives it a bit of a push in a musical way). The best thing? All of it is PASSIVE.

The idea of changing the tonal range of a pointy 80's metal bass might sound odd......but!! I love the overall playability of the damn thing soooo much, I would never sell it. Therefore, I don't mind adding an extra hole or two if needed for more electronics. I'm going to give Villex a call on monday. Thanks again for the input.

Do you have any sound clips of your basses with them??

There is just something special about this bass. I've played quite a few BIG dollar "boutique" 4 strings and needless to say, I'd rather do some mods to the electronics this!! It even balances nicely despite the body shape.

Dare I suggest the control outlay that I have used on my Voodoo bass? I still use 3 holes only and I have vol/vol. mid-control and the passive booster (just to keep things fully reversible
