vintage hagstrom I bass grounding/humming issue?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 65(?) hagstrom I bass. i understand single coil picks hum. but this is starting to annoy me. I hear a buzzing when i plug my bass into my amp. its even worse when plugged into a distortion pedal. when i touch the screws it softens but its still there. I take it apart and everything seems to be soldered and wired correctly. i plug just the top board in, no buzz. i set it back on to the body...buzz. im stumped. might it possibly be that thin wire on the body under thats under the pickups, running from the neck to the bridge? please help!!!

the wire on the body is connected to one of two screws on the body and the bridge screws touch it when the top is placed back on. the same wire touches the back of the pickups and the shielding as well.

I've corrected the problem on my old Hagstrom basses by grounding the output jack. I took a short screw, soldered a piece of wire to it. screwed it in to the body under the pickguard where it won't be seen and soldered the other end to the output jack or to the chrome sleeve that the output jack threads into. It took care of the problem for me.
