Vintage sound with Marcus Miller bass ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I want to have a less Hi-fi sound with my Fender Marcus Miller bass, more like Larry Graham.
Do you think changing the pickup would be good or just equing the bass with my EBS Microbass will do it ?
I'm thinking about Fender CS 60, Seymour Duncan Vintage or Dimarzio Model J.

Just play it passive.

You bought a hi-fi sounding bass! Just bypass the preamp.

Also Larry Graham used Rotosound light-gauge, black nylon strings on those Sly records.

You can get closer to vintage, but you may have trouble nailing it. The Marcus Miller bass and the mid-70's basses are made of ash, not the alder the 60's vintage basses are made of. However, by changing the bridge to the stock Fender bridge instead of the Badass II that's on the MM bass you should be able to get a lot closer to vintage just doing that. And as other posters have already said, bybassing the preamp will also help.

Cool! I also prefer bridges with less mass than the Badass II.
