VM tele with Jazz added to bridge

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Squier Vintage Modified Tele bass and I want your opinions. I love the sound of a precision and wanted to route a p-pickup in the stock p location into my VM Tele. But visually a jazz pickup would look more balanced on the body. What would the it sound like to blend the stock humbucker with a jazz single coil? I just can't imagine it. Somebody please compare it to something I would know. Or a sound clip would be nice.

One of my friends did this last year. We put the J p/u, an EMG Select, in the '70's position.

He then had me wire in a 3-way switch for p/u select.

What it did was add a really nice articulation to the big, round sound of the 'bucker.

End result ... MAJOR bang-for-the-buck !!! A great rocker. Deep,
punchy, yet with a nice voice.

I'll see if I can get some pics this weekend.

This thing has suffered a pretty hefty "relic job" and looks like it's about 30 years old.

I found this one on my flash-drive ... you gotta look pretty hard just to see the J p/u.

Fender Japan does this as a stock instrument.
Tombowlus has one.
pm him for pics and comments; I don't remember the model number, but it's a semihollow "thinline" Tele...

Thanks for the pic. I've been dying to get mine reliced. I'm trying to get a sound out of it that fits with the band. So far no luck. A vintage p sound fits so perfectly that I think I should route it for a P pickup and be done with all of my second guessing. My stage bass now sounds perfect but looks too modern. (ibanez SR400 Heavily, HEAVILY, modded) The Tele looks the part but can't fit with the guitar.

Check out The Throbbing Hot Rods on youtube, pick the song called Saddle Up.

Sorry it was filmed with a cell phone camera.

Oh man, a P pickup in the middle would be insane, mabye overkill though.

I don't see it as overkill because I'd only be using the p-pickup, the mudbucker would be shiny eye candy only at that point. Hey, are there chrome p covers available?

I ment a P a J and a Mudbucker, I can see that being overkill for some, not me though!

you're right, it's not overkill, I should go for the jazz and the p as long as I'm having it routed. We can start a club with basses that have all the fender pickups in them. I wonder if a MM would fit in there too.

You'll also need a single coil, non split p pickup!

I was assuming the split p would fit, but you know what happens when you assume.

What measurements do I need to do to figure this out?

Also the lace alumatone pickups have the right look (chrome) so I'm going to investigate them a little.

Does anyone have any more expirience with routing a pickup into a TB?

I want to give new life to this bass i just need some examples to look at.
