Either way, if your pickup goes to the center terminal of the pot, reverse the two outside terminals. One should be ground and one should (eventually) go to the output.

| | | | Aren't volume pots usually reverse log pots? ...which are different than regular pots used for tone? Are you sure you didn't get a standard pot instead of the reverse log type needed for volume control? |

EDIT: I just realized that doesn't even make any sense. Never mind.

easy fix, put the wire to ground to the other outside lug.
Speculation on taper etc is fun but has nothing to do with this.
Log pot commonly have a 70/30 taper, meaning that on a 500k pot, 0 to 250k happens in the first 70 (on a Fender amp that would be 0-7) percent of the pot and 250k-500k is the last 30% (7-10). reverse taper would be 0-250 in first 30% (0-3) and 250k-500k in the last 70% (3-10).
Reverse taper is used in a lot of tremolo circuits where the most control is needed at the upper ends of the sweep.

MM | this is about the easiest thing to fix in the whole world.
1) On the volume pot, remove hot lead from the current lug, bend it to the body of the pot and solder it to the body (thus grounding it)
2) Remove the solder blob on the oppostise lug, un-bend it away from the body of the pot and attach the hot lead to that lug
Done!
