volume knob issue

Sign in to disble this ad
i have a bass with two humbuckers, push/pull pots on the volume knobs for coil splitting, a 3 way switch, and two tone knobs.

got all that? good.

the issue, is either volume knob when turned all the way down will cut the sound out completely. what is causing this? and how do i fix it?

FWIW:

this first thing I'd do is determine what the volume knobs are doing. Turn the amp volume low and tap on the pups with like a pup screw (metal) while you adjust each volume control. That should tell you if each volume is controlling both pups or what. I would try it in both single and HB mode.

Obviously, the bass isn't wired to isolate a pup to each volume. My guess is it's in the switching cause switching is usually what guys miswire most consistently.

You can also check FAQ Dimento's Trouble Shooting Guide for other info.

My bet is that your volume pots are wired backwards. You have likely wired them up like you would the volume pots on a Les Paul. You need to wire them up like you would on a Jazz Bass. This will allow the volume pots to be used to blend the sound of the pickups. It's just 2 wire on each pot that need to be reversed.

Here is a drawing of a Les Paul system.

And here is the same system that is corrected to allow the volume pots to work independently

The yellow solder points in the second drawing are the ones that need to be swapped.
