Question Volume pots and blending.

Sign in to disble this ad
I've always wondered about loading while blending.
I have an American P Deluxe and I took the actives out and made it purely passive.
The P-pup is about 9K and the humbucker is about 6K.
I was thinking I should use a 500K pot for the Humbucker pup volume and a 250K pot for the P-pup volume.
The reason for this is I want the humbucker to stand out a little better since it has a weaker output.
Right now they are both 250K and the humbucker is noticeably weaker.
Any experienced thoughts out there?

Go for it. There is no harm in giving it a try.

FWIW, note that since the pots are running parallel, increasing the value of one pickup's pot will also affect the other pickup. The total resistance parallel to the output will change from 125K to 166.67K, which to a *slight* degree, will make both pickups brighter.

Also, 6K is a rather low DC resistance for a humbucker, which would indicate that the coils are parallel. Have you tried wiring them in series? That would increase the output and midrange.

The "Dual Jazz" humbucker is sealed. If you are suggesting wiring the P and humbucker in series to each other than I get a lot of hum from the unbalanced circuit.
I wonder if linear pots would be better?

No, I meant wiring the two coils that make up the humbucker in series.

Does it have a four conductor output?

Just the two wires.
Another thing though is when I have both full up and lower one just a bit it cuts out almost all of the way.
Maybe two 500K volumes would brighten it up a bit.
Ughh, I hate it when I can't quit tinkering...lol.
