Volume pots cutting out both pickups

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a new Waterstone TP-4 which has two humbuckers with two volume, two tone, and a three way switch. I noticed that with the 3-way switch set in the middle (both pickups on) if you roll either volume pot all the way off it cuts out both pickups no matter where the other volume pot is set. Yet if you set the 3-way switch to isolate each pickup the volume pot for each respective pickup seems to work fine. I've checked the wiring against several diagrams and everything is wired correctly. Anyone have any idea what may be causing this?

Look here:

If you check on the guitar humbuckers section it seems to matter if your pickups are in series of parallel. I would sort that issue out first and then find an appropriate Les Paul wiring diagram

Yes they are. I've checked the wiring against several diagrams and it looks correct.

Interesting!

Scroll down to the second diagram from the bottom..."Gibson Les Paul wiring" and read what it says. I guess this is normal.

right. on guitars, you generally get a better sweep and better tone with the pots wired this way, with the volume pots' middle lugs going to the output.

jazz basses have to do it the other way, with the volume pots' middle lugs receiving the pickups, or you wouldn't be able to turn off one pickup.

since you have a switch on the bass, this shouldn't be an issue.

Yup, not a big deal. As long as I know this is normal I can deal with it. If I want one pickup off I'll just use the switch. Thanks.
