Volume Question With 2 Pickups

Sign in to disble this ad
I have 2 jazz and 1 PJ bass and have always noticed that the volume from both pickups on is always louder than the volume from any single pickup. Is this true?

Kind of a strange question but sounds about right - even though technically both maxed there's a slightly audible volume drop (more so with a blend apparently). Normally I only play a single pup but have been dinking with a pair lately.

Amp gain and volume makes pup output pretty irrelevant when it comes right down to it.

Actually, its generally the opposite, due to the pickups electronically loading off each other (unless you have an active/ buffered blending circuit of some sort)- it may not be that pronounced on your bass, it tends to differ with different combinations.

If you're talking the typical V/V/T or V/T, V/T control configuraton then running both pickups full up, will drop the overall output slightly. This is actually a good thing in my book.

To work it to your advantage, set your EQ & volume for both pickups full up. You need a little more bottom, roll of the bridge pickup a smidgen - as you've noticed - it doesn't take much to make the difference. Want as little more cut though for soloing? roll off the neck pickup just a bit and now you're brighter and just a tad louder...

V/V/T works well this way but V/T, V/T is even better as you can roll the tone off the bridge pickup a but and then when you roll down the neck pickup - you're jaco - well, you're closer to him tonally anyway ...

There is a quick cure for this found at guitarnuts site http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/stockgibson.php
Just throw a 47K resistor on each hot wire off the the pickup. Have tried this with a couple basses - gave a smoother control of the volume as well.
