Volume/Tone Pots w/ New Pickups on a J-Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all -

I'm looking forward to getting an Ultra-Jazz Dimarzio Set of pickups for my J-Bass Fretless (oh boy oh oh boy!).

Q: I was wondering if I had to swap out the Volume & Tone Pots (250K) to other pots with a higher capacitance, since the new pickups are higher output/humbucking.

If I can get away with the existing pots, great. Otherwise...If anyone's had any experience with getting better tonal results with different Pots, I'd be anxious to hear about it...

Looking forward to your responses!

First off, capacitance is a measure of energy storage, pots are variable resistors, so their rated value is a measure of resistance in Ohms.

Higher pot values will present less of a resistive load parallel to the signal, so will thus give you a bit more output/treble. The difference is rather subtle. You should be fine with the existing pots.

True, I'd leave it alone, but if you want to get brave, I'd recomend putting in a series/paralell switch. The series mode will thicken the output a lot. It's like having a Jazz bass and P-base output in one.

Whoops - ohms vs capacitance! I should know that. Must have had a brain cramp.
