Wait for new pots or install new pups now?

I just got a set of Reverend pups to replace the stock on my 93 MIK Fender P-bass. The pots on the bass are muy scratchy, so I'm in the process of getting some replacements. Should I wait 'til they arrive before swapping the pups, or get busy today? Also, should I replace the ouput jack? Would it make a difference?

Yes, first of all, I would replace the output jack. Use a Switchcraft #11 if possible, best one out there IMO.

Installing today wouldn't hurt, soldering can be undone without problem, and frankly, the extra practice on old pots certainly never hurts.

Thanks for your quick responses, guys! As this will be my first time using the soldering gun, I guess practice will make perfect, huh?

I never realized a bit of hardware such as an output jack could make such a difference. That being said, should I look for a specific set of pots/cap? I've been bidding on Japanese 57 & 62 RI pots on eBay w/cap attached. Are these worthy replacements for Korean Squier Series pots, or would a different brand be a better choice?

You need to use the same type of pots that the P-bass has now. Check them out to see if they are 10K, 50K, ect. Using the wrong pots will really make it hard to adjust your volume/tone. Also you might want to get center detent (CD) pots. They are the pots that stop a little in the middle (5) so you can easily find it. Check out WD music or any other music supplier to find good pots.

Just visited guitarpartsresource.com and now I'm feeling confused! There's wiring kits with either cloth or poly wrapped wire - tonal difference between the two? The pups to be installed are not cloth wired, so would cloth wire to the pots make a difference?

Also, looking at Fender vs. other caps. Many different varieties, with numbers with decimals that are Greek to me - I don't know what the differences would be tonally and/or compatibility wise with different pots. Any advice, TBers?

Choose the poly kit, easier to work with and NO difference in sound. A .047mf cap is standard on P Basses.

Cloth/poly doesn't make a difference. It's just easier to work with poly, but some people want that vintage vibe inside their bass too.

The caps in there are fine, standard for a P-bass.
