Having built a few SVF based filters, the pickups' tone still comes through and is a major part of the total sound.

I know I am a little late on here
but the Peavey Cirrus (USA) can get pretty close to a "wal tone" and they play incredibly well.
Here's a link of a tune tune I recorded with a custom shop cirrus that sounds fairly close to a wal...
