warwick thumb bolt-on

i have a warwick 6 string thumb bolt-on. when i have the push/pull knob in i don't get any sound whatsoever. when i have it out i get some sound but it's crackely and cuts in and out. anybody have any ideas?

Does it have a fresh battery?

I ask because I had a Thumb BO for several years and know that the bass won't work at all without a battery. Maybe it's got just enough power to let the passive mode work (sort of) but not the active mode.
