Warwick Vette 5 DublBuck Active Upgrade Suggestion?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been searching thru and thru and though there are many posts/threads related to the MusicMan style humbuckers on this bass, I haven't seen anything to this particular application.

This bass has an ash body w/ an ovankol neck and seems to have a naturally dark tone to it that I would like to be able to brighten up as needed. I have 4 slots for pots and 2 toggle switches, so my configuration possibilities are there.

I have a straightforward heavy fingerstyle suited for rock/metal but would like to have the flexibility for a tone suited to slap/pop and tapping. Ultimately, I need more clarity and brightness without sacrificing warmth, punch, and growl.

Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated

I had the same dilemma as you. In the end, I solved the problem by trading the corvette The low B was too muddy for my liking.

I was looking at Delano's, and for the preamp, I wasn't sure (but from experience, the ACG is well worth the money). In any case, it will be expensive.

Frankly I don't really know what a pickup and preamp swap would change. I quite liked the stock slap tone though.

Personally, for aggressive stuff, I loved the tone of the Thumb BO 5 I had, much tighter and growlier in the lows (the highs were a bit weird though). The corvette was no match. but the thumb was too uncomfortable and heavy.

Well, I had a maple-necked, ash-bodied Fernandez Gravity 5 string that I swapped the passive EMG-HZs out w/ a pair of EMG 40DC's.(the post-mod original preamp became faulty and was replaced with a different pre altogether so I don't know which pre was in there)

This seriously changed the sound of this bass. It became extremely bright, punchy, and the mid to hi bass growl became very prominent.

It was an awesome sounding bass, but very cumbersome. Should have at least kept it for studio work

I recomend ceramic Basslines (smb5d) pickups and an Aguilar obp-3.
I hate mec preamps in general so maybe you could just ditch the pre and install the obp-3.
IMO of course.
