Weak output from Quarter Pound P-bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all, I have an MIM P-bass that I've had forever and it has Quarter pounders in it. Other basses with this pickup that I've heard sound full and super punchy. Mine does not. It sounds thin, quieter than my Jag, is lacking some treble, and sounds sort of "fuzzy" and undefined. This is the third different set of pickups that have been in this bass over its lifetime, could this be a wiring issue? I'm thinking maybe the solder joints have been soldered over so much that the connections aren't great. What do you think?

I agree, wiring issue would be my first guess.

Is it possible that the two bobbins have been separated and rewired out of phase? This would seriously affect low end and low-mid output which would come across as thin-sounding.

They've never been apart as far as I know. I had a tech put them in and I've only had them out to experiment whether the two coils were different, but they didn't come apart.
