| weak tone and volume on Jazz

I have a real 66 Jazz strung with TI's and with Lindys in it. The tone is fine at low volume but in a playing situation the tone is hollow and weak. I find myself really digging in way too hard. I don't have this issue with my Precision that has Nords on it. I have a MIM also that has a OLD (25 years old)set of EMG Selects on it that sounds way better.Any ideas?
