Hi TB!
I own a westone spectrum ii since uhmmm 1991.
http://www.westone.info/spectrum2bass.html
I can't find a reason to get rid of it!
Solid mechanics, barely looses the tune, straight neck after 20 years, pots silent, punchy sound and efficient active electronics.
It is equipped with 2 soapboxes magnabass iv and v, can't say about what is inside the bass, the electronics.

There is just a thing that does not make me happy, which is the mid pot, (tone?), whose effect on the sound is pretty much none, if not for the last tenth of a turn.
I have been long considering an upgrade, but don't know where to start from: pickups, electronics or both?
Any advice will be appreciated!

Thank you in advance and cheers from hamburg, germany.

Sergio

Since you bassically like the tone, then changing preamp for more effective for you mid control sounds best to me. Since you like the pups sound. I remember westone from back then, they made some very nice basses as I remember.

Hi darkstorm, thank you.
Do i understand it properly, you suggest to upgrade the active eq? Cool, now: where do i start from in the choice process? Would any eq do the job or am i limited in the choice by specific features of my bass ( one control for high and low boost or the dual mode selector, for example)?
Understandin this would help me a lot!!!

Cheers sergio

If the tone control works only in the last tenth of the turn, you likely have a logarithmic potentiometer. Look at the pot and read its value (should be A250K or A500K), then replace it with a linear potentiometer (B250K or B500K) and the tone control should be more... controllable. Also, it barely costs anything.
