Many, many TBers rave about it as the quintessential P pup though. Go figure.

It's not the quintessential vintage pickup, I agree, but it's very versatile in a P bass. A few people are always complaining about the sound of the QPs and a few of them have even had them on their bass. I can understand not liking the sound of a pickup and preferring something else, but some of the descriptions thrown around about the Quarter Pounders makes me wonder "what kind of eq are these guys using on their amps and what is their technique like?"
I can get a good sound out of any decent pickup with good strings, an adequate amp and good playing technique. And I can get it when recording too. I can also can get it using other brands and types of pickups including some of the current favorites here. |

Whichever one you like the most, sound is subjective, everyone will have thier own choices.
Personally id go for a Nordy NP4, but thats just me

I have a pair in my squier fretless P I bought in the 80's.
But.....
The carrot option still stands.
But a second one is:
However if you really want vintage, with no price limit, find yoself old vintage ones.
1979 Pbass $645:
Don't forget some old pots from 1966 $87:
And for Mojo's sake do a 1971 pickguard $425:
Also don't forget some neck plate and bridge:

I love the 62's on my P, and I have the 1/4 Pounders on a P/J that sounds incredible with TI flats on it.
