Either that, or one of those horrible onboard distortion units. |

Either that, or one of those horrible onboard distortion units. | You mean two diodes in a little black box

Are there any part numbers on it at all? Identifying markings? Three wires...hmm...pickup of some kind (piezo)? Inline filter? |

It looks like either a filter or a black ice overdrive (which I've never actually heard or seen).
EDIT: Damn. Beaten to both.

It was in a bass I picked up from a pawn shop, seemed to be wired into the tone circut, instead of a capacitor.
The bass didnt have any distortion, so I dont think it is a variation of a "Black Ice"
Ok, so I am thinking it is an inline filter.
I was thinking someone may recognize this, and know specifically what it's intended purpose / application was.. |

The Black Ice diodes (two schottkeys) will give an overdriven sound if the PUPS have a high enough DC resistance (the new ones require at least 10K ohms). If the PUPS don't have a high enough resistance it won't produce distortion, so it's quite possible someone tried to get an overdriven bass sound by wiring in this device, but from what you're saying it didn't work.
How was it wired in? It's a little odd that it has 3 wires. One wire to the tone pot and two wires attached together running to ground?
There is only one way to find out - carefully open it up. You can always recreate whatever it is, diodes are about a nickel each if that's what's in there, caps and resistors are equally cheap if it's a filter.
