What are the advantages of big pole pieces?

That's my question.

I always liked MusicMan pickups, ended up getting rid of my Sterling because I wasn't satisfied with the lack of low end I was getting. Now that I'm putting either a Jazz bass or a P/J bass together, I'd like to know if J or P pickups with bigger pole pieces will give me the attack of the Musicman while also giving me the low end I was missing.

The size of the pole pieces affects the tone because it changes the dimensions of the coil and the magnetic force of the pickup.

You won't get the Musicman sound with someone else's pickups and preamp; that's the stuff that makes the Musicman sound...
