What pickups do you use with your Jazz Bass & Audere Preamp??

Sign in to disble this ad
I gotta say I'm a little disappointed. My favorite sounding jazz bass pickups, which are Model J's, sound terrible (imo) with my Audere Preamp. They sound great in my other Jazz bass, which I've kept passive...but I want something that's a little more crisp. Having owned a set of Dimarzio Area J's in the past....which were in a Jazz bass I recently traded with a TBer, I've decided to order a set. I enjoyed their tone, and they had a little more snap...I can't wait until Wednesday.

So what pickups do you guys/gals use with your Audere Preamps? Have any similar issues, or swapped pickups until you found one that worked?

Be on the look out in the classifieds, as I'll have a set of creme Model J's for sale later this week.

I'm using Lindy Fralin pickups in my J-Frankenbass (Fender '62 MIJ reissue body and Warmoth neck) with an Audere preamp. Great sound, no hum with the blend control and enormous tonal range. No issues at all.

2002 Fender American Deluxe with Audere JZ-5D and Dimarzio Area J's. I've only had the pickups in for five days, but I've played it a lot and practiced with the band once. So far, I believe that they are the real deal and I am extremely happy. Smooth lows, punchy mids, sounds (to me) like a J should. Awesome baby!

I wish the Model J's would have worked...they're great pickups...but I think they work best without active electronics. I've had them in my other jazz for about a year and a 1/2, and they'll stay in it.

I take it you're using the Lindy split-coils?

I like that they sound quite close to a single coil Jazz pickup...in a split coil package!!

Nope, the Fralin single coil replacements.

Great pickups...I had them in a bass years ago. I wasn't sure if the single coils would still hum with the Audere. Oh well, I've already ordered the Area J's from GC, as I've already had them and loved their tone.

Take Care!

I had a similar experience with Delano JMVC FE pickups and an Audere. They sounded horrible together. I love the Delano pups with their Sonar preamplifier on one of my J's, but the Audere with those pups was horrible. I do love the same Audere with Seymour Duncan SJB3 Quarter Pounders on my other J. The QPs were okay passively, but the Audere made them really shine. The Delano's were a very hot pickup by themselves and I think the Audere made them way too intense - it was fingernails on a chalkboard.

I once owned a jazz bass (Fender Geddy Lee sig) with an Audere in it. I had two Darkstars in there.

Couldn't ask for a better tone.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I'm thinking the Audere doesn't handle powerful pickups as well. I even turned the gain down all the way, and when I soloed the neck pickup, it was still too gainy in low z mode. I loved it with single coil Fralins though...it was fantastic...I probably should have just gone with those again.

Wow...and WHY don't you own it still??

The Darkstars weren't extremely gainy/ or high output were they.

Ever considered getting rid of the Audere?

I tried them with Fralin singles, Aero singles, Bart soapbars and Nordy splits and found them to be some pretty nasty sounding preamps.

I love the Audere preamp. I put it in my MIM 70s J bass with stock pickups, tone is great to me. I also threw it in my Squier VM J for a while and it was awesome there too (stock pickups as well). This is a great quality preamp and very easy to install, long battery life too. Have you tried a different amp to play through?

I think they're good preamps...and not only because I have one. They offer variety, and my pickups still sound like my pickups. But once I boost the EQ, it gets a little gainy, no matter the frequency I'm boosting. One of the factors is that because the Model J's are such tall pickups, I can't get them to sit very deep in the pickup cavity, and they already happen to be a very low/low-mid sounding pickup. The one thing I will agree with you is that the sparkling highs aren't there. You can swap the cap, but I haven't...so I can't confirm that it would help any.

I have 2 markbass heads...so that's all I'm spending for now. I think it's the pickups/preamp pairing that isn't working for me.

I installed the audere to go w my Dimarzio model Js and I find that they rock! I tend to use low z mode, favour the bridge pickup abit and boost abit of mids. Killer humbucker sound, really gives the tim commerford vibe.

what do you not like about the model js?

Paired with the Audere, they're too gainy/powerful for my taste...This wouldn't have been a problem if I could have lowered their height into the cavity.
