what pickups for my bass?

i have a peavey grind 4 string that im doing a fretless conversion on and would like to know what pickups to get?

Try out the original pickups after the conversion and see if you like them or not.

If you don´t, what kind of sound are you looking for?

What kind of pickups does a Grind have? Jazz, precision? You might want to find a dude with a fretless tone that you love and go from there. You can copy not only his pickups but his strings, amp, haircut. Probably his technique, too.

the grind has soapbar? style pickups which im quite sure is one of the areas peavey cut costs on but other than the fret work, original strings, rough sanded finish and sub par electronics its one hell of a bass for the money all most as good as my $200 squire

Get P-bass pickups. They are way better than soapbar pickups...

Um, I don't see putting P bass pickups in a Grind, the pickup routing wouldn't work for them at all.

Probably there are Bart pickups with the same dimensions as your current pickups, maybe EMGs. What size are the current pickups, and do you mind having to route the body to fit a different size?

I like the idea of waiting until you've done the conversion, the current pickups might be just fine.

why does everybody think soapbars are automatically bad pickups, the soapbars on the peavey might be cut-quality, but that doesn't necessarily mean that all soapbars are bad.

Soapbar is just a standard term to describe a non-exposed pole humbucker generally looking quite soap shaped. They work in exactly the same way as any other humbuckers. Size and shape in soapbars differ hugely, so you should definately check to see what pickups out there fit. My guess would be Bartolini, but i really am not sure.
