What pickups (size) will work as replacements on a Lakland 55-01?

Sign in to disble this ad
Looking to get a Lakland soon and figured that I'd have to change out the low quality Korean "Barts" for GOOD quality pickups. Probably the preamp as well.

I need to know what pickups will fit the routing on the 55-01, taking into account routing chanel and string spacing.

I'm interested in a good punchy jazz sound with great lows, mids, and some clear highs.

Thanks!

I'd suggest Villex pickups, esp the new line. The "Classic" Villex is less bright (still suitable for what you describe). You can order either of them based on the Bart size that is there already.

I've never heard of Villex pickups. Are they a European maker?

Any other suggestions (from the other members)?

I've got Nordy dual coils in mine. Great pickups, coil switching option is real nice.

Thanks for the link to that wonderful thread with sound clips! Very good!

Did you play the Lakland with the MK-1 pickups as a comparison before putting in the Nordies?

Also from the thread, the Bartolini MK5cbc is supposed to fit as well.

Good information!

He's the guy (Villen Khanagov) who invented Lace Transsensor and Alumitone pickups.

I'm assuming the Villex pickups are based on something similar.

Yes, I used mine for about 1 1/2 years with the MK1's. I think they're pretty good pick ups. Very good with Flatwounds IMO.
FYI-my 55-01 has a Bart NTMB-L factory pre (like the 55-02's).

But I can't imagine buying flats for myself, so I would be using some brand of nickle wound or Elixers, and need to have a pretty warm sounding bass. I may go with the Bart MK5 setup (pickups and preamp). I think it should make the 55-01 sound much better.

I would think the USA barts would sound great. USA Barts were my original plan for this bass. But than the Nordstrands got my attention. IMO-the coil switching is really worth the effort.(nudge, nudge)

I feel your nudges, and I'd probably enjoy the capability, but it may be too much for my needs. I only play through a church sound system, so who knows how useful coil switching would ultimately be. I'll think about it more, though. I DO like the exposed poles on the Nordies.

BTW, your pickup model of Nords are what?

Like BillBern, my Nordstrands in the 55-01 are dual coils. Did you guys go with "wound for parallel" or "wound for series"? I went with parallel assuming they'd be hotter (at the expense of some high end) since I'm planning on taking the bass passive at some point in the near future.

Parallel or Series?
