What pickups are stock in the MIM Fender 60's Jazz Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been less than satisfied with the tone I'm getting with this bass. I have a Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickup installed in my 80's Precision Bass and that sounds incredible, so I have been considering swapping out the stock Jazz pickups for a set of Antiquity II Jazz pickups.

If anyone knows what pickups come stock in the MIM 60's Jazz Bass (not the "Road Worn" model, just the 60's Classic model) and could post that info here, I'd appreciate it. Might help me figure out where to start looking as far as replacements are concerned. I'd hate to spend money on the Antiquity II's if they aren't all that different from what is in the bass now.

Thanks!

Take a look at Fender.com, customer support and go to the listed part numbers then try to match that number up with something else that you are familiar with. It will not be easy because they have a lot of different pickups and few have any special names, only part numbers.

These are the same pickups that come stock on the MIM Standard models and also the Roadworn models. The Duncans would more than likely improve your tone, assuming that its just not the jazz bass's inherant character that you may not like. Also, you may want to check out Lindy Fralins. I replaced the stock pups in my MIM 50's Precision and it was a revealation. Fenders own 62 pickups are also an improvement over their stock ones, IMO.

If you look at the specs for the 60's Jazz Bass (MIM, model 013180, http://www.fender.com/products/searc...tno=0131800300 ) it lists the pickups as "Standard Vintage Alnico Magnet Jazz BassŪ Single-Coil"

If you look in the Accessories area, it shows "Vintage Jazz Bass Pickups" (http://www.fender.com/products/searc...tno=0992123000) "Vintage style pickups used in most '60s and '70s reissue Jazz BassŪ models. Pickups are made with Alnico V magnets, enamel coated magnet wire, and a copper shield."

These aren't the same pickups used in the MIM Classics or the Highways Ones. Fender is apparently referring to MIA reissues in their description.

The ones used in the '60s Classic, Road Worn and H1s (up to current production) are the 58358/9 set, about $20 each, brand new in the Fender bag from eBay.

I know this is an old thread... but:

Do you get much hum with both volumes up all the way with the stock pups? Or are they pretty quiet? Thanks!

I have both a Fender MIM 60's Jazz Bass and a Fender Road Worn MIM Jazz Bass. The pickup are definitely different. The 60's JB pickups have more output. I believe that Fender design the Road Worn pickups to be closer to the correct specs since I have an original set of 1966 Jazz Bass pickups I saved from the Jazz Bass I bought in 1966 and the characteristic seem very close. Still I'm not happy with the sound of the Road Worn stock pickups and I am experimenting with other pickup choices. In my comparison I can tell you that my real 1966 JB pickups might have slightly higher output than the stock MIM Road Worn JB pickups and sound more defined. I also have a set of Seymour Duncan Vintage Jazz Bass pickups from the early 80's. I realize simply reading the resistance is not much of an indication of sound but if anyone is interested the Seymour Duncan Vinage JB are 9.5 (both bridge and neck are the same). The Road Worn pickups are 7.2 (both are same). My original 1966 Jazz Pickups read 6.3 on bridge and 7.4 on neck. After trying the 3 choices I think I am going with the early 80's Seymour Duncan Vintage Jazz pickups.
