What pots to buy?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got an Essex p-bass and the volume and tone knobs don't rotate smoothly (wobble) and I want to replace the pots anyway when I upgrade the pickups. I want to get 250k pots but other than that, I don't know what I need to be looking for in a volume and tone pot. What do you all think?

Just an idea, if a slight wobble is the only problem have you tried tightening the nut that holds it on?

IGAM, the nut is tight but I will recheck that. I would like to upgrade all of the electronics in the SX. So, split shaft, solid shaft, long shaft 250k pots? Also, what mfd# caps??? How many caps? Anything else I need???

Solid shaft or split shaft depends only on what type of knob you have. If the knob is metal and held be a little screw, is a solid shaft. I plastic knob is held by compression, and it needs a slip shaft.

Most Fender-type bass use 3/8"-long shafts.

You can either get a "genuine" Fender part off eBay - and they come with a .22 capacitor, and washers, or get a CTS audio taper pot, (which is the same thing as the Fender) but since you are not experienced, I would go with the Fender for peace of mind (it just cost about $2.00 more).

All parts also have them packaged for retail sale at Guitar Center.

Capacitors for bass usually are either .22 or .47 (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).
