What preamp with EMG pickups?

If I were to have a bass custom-built with EMG pickups, what preamp would be the ideal one to use? I haven't really heard of many active basses with EMG preamps.

I like EMG pickups by themselves. I have a Jazz with them in it, and it just rocks my face off.

Wait a minute -- nearly all EMG bass pickups are active, correct? So why would you need to buy a separate preamp?

For EQ control.

Not all EMG pick ups are active. EMG has two different lines of passive pick ups. One being the Hz series and the other being the Select by EMG series.

Usually when talking about those, people specifically mention HZ's or the Selects.
