what preamps will work with my EMG's?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone. i just traded my Ibanez SR506 for an Aria Pro Avante series AVB 45-5....Thanks Engage757! it came installed with a pair of EMG Jazz style pickups. I dont think they are the stock pickups, as i havent seen any other of these basses with them installed. They are wired right now as V-V-T-T (2 volumes and 2 tones). i am really used to working with an onboard preamp and all though i really dig the tone these get right now, im wondering what transparent preamps will work with these pickups? ive heard from some people you have to use EMG preamps with there pickups but ive also seen people use Aguilar preamps with them. so im wondering what preamps will work with these pickups. im thinking of the Audere 4-band if it will work. i play alot of styles of music, but my main gig is progressive metal right now.

thanks!

Are your pickups passive? No battery? I ask because many EMG's are active.
If passive, any pre will work.

they are active.
ive done some more research and from what it sounds like, all i need to hook these up to another preamp is 25k volume pots. and then the tone controls are the same as any other.

It might be easier to answer which preamps won't work with EMGs...since so many seem to work quite nicely.

well i guess my question mainly is now, what preamps will compliment the tone of emg's well? i want something fairly transparent. ive heard that alot of EMG preamps color your tone even when set flat. i want something that will be useable for many genres but stay fairly transparent and preserve natural tone well.
ive been looking at the EMG BTS, Aggi OBP-2, and Audere preamps. id really like something 2 band, because my amp has sweetable mids and i dont see the need for anymore mid boosting really.

East U-retro preamp works really well, the sweepable mids are great on my Spectors and take an already great bass to a new dimension. John East is a great guy to deal with too.
