| | | | What Precision Bass Pickup do you recommend?

I love my Fender Geddy Lee Signature Jazz and my Fender '51 Reissue Precision. I'm considering getting a "standard" style P-bass (one with a split-coil pickup) as my next bass. (GAS, its a killer...) Knowing that I can adjust the hardware to suit my need, what kind of P-bass pickups do you guys play and recommend? It's hard to say exactly what I'm looking for, other than the traditional, almost dirty, most likely "series" P-Bass tone I can't seem to get with my bright, punchy Jazz and warm, round vintage style P-bass.
Even if its not a custom DiMarzio or Seymour Duncan (although I'd like to hear your thoughts on those), I'm open to hearing about stock pups as well.
Or if anyone is just really knowledgeable about the different eras of P-basses and the typical tone that would be helpful too! |

I put a set in a $20 ibanez gsr on a whim for my nephew and I can't but it down .... it just sounds great. I also like my '97 fender stock p-bass pups and the 57 ri pups. |

The "raised A's" that came on my '57 AVI are not bad either.

- DiMarzio Split-Ps (DP127s) - a more modern sounding P, with more treble, a little more mid, and a good, round bottom.
- DiMarzio DP122s - a nice, full sounding, punchy P tone.
Honestly, I like them all, but of these, I think the DP122s are the more versatile set. The QPs can feel like a little too much sometimes, and the Split-Ps have an almost active or EQ'd quality to them. None of that is bad, mind you. It's just each one is different. |

| | | | The best P pickup I've had experience with is the Tone Perfect P-bass pickup but I don't think you can buy them anywhere, it's fat and warm but super aggressive if you dig in or play with a pick. The only pickups that have come close to that are the Seymour Duncan SPB-2 or Fralins. |

I like the hz's their more powerfull than the 08 pups and I don't get the grit but I think their ok. I'll probably put the stock back in before I venture out again.
I've always liked the pups that Fender installs they seem to fit the over all package very well. Ofcourse you can get crappy pups on any brand name model but generally speaking the stock Fenders are very good. Doc. |

I recently replaced the SD Antiquity on my '65 P with a new set of Lollars and the difference is noticeable.
The Antiquities were great pickups.
The Lollars are beyond great...great low end thump with a bit more clarity than the SD's.
