What to put in a wenge neck mahogany body bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Lately I've been looking at this bass, an Ibanez 506. The things that draw me to it are 1) cheapish 6 string 2) sweet looking wood combination 3) good sound. Good sound, not fantastic. Now maybe if I got the chance to play one for a bit I'd get a sound I liked just fine. I'm not saying I'd change the electronics for sure. But a wenge neck mahogany bass seems like it could have a real growly sound with the right electronics, so if the bass didn't already have a sweet sound it would still be able to with some modification. Has anybody swapped the electronics in one of the 500 Ibanez models? I'm thinking maybe just change the preamp.

FWIW:

I can tell if I don't like a bass right away but it takes me a good month or so of regular play to know if a really like a bass (in terms of tone). If the bass meets your other criteria the tone can be altered. Most pre's I've had give more control but don't alter tone, pup swaps or going outside the bass to me is the place to alter tone. Don't play extended range but seems the more strngs you get over 4 the fewer the pup options become - 6 string in particular going by past TB posts. Ideally, you want the bass to meet your needs as is with no changes required when you get it.
