What should i do with my Delano Hybrid (MM + J) pickup set?
without any masterplan i purchased a very cheap Delano pickup-set:
1. Delano Hybrid 4 MM pickup:
2. Delano JC 4 AL-H Jazz pickup:
3. Delano Sonar 2 preamp:
What should i do with it? My initial plan is buying a second hand Squier by Fender Classic Vibe 60s Jazz bass and put those Delano pickups in it ... i know, much modification needed, but it it worth it? Since i both like Musicman and Jazz Bass sound it seems like an interesting idea having both sound options in one bass guitar.
Any other ideas?
I would recommend a Brubaker Brute; I had one and did something similar with some Basslines pickups and an Aguilar OBP3 preamp (first wiring project, took months to figure out what the hell I was doing, finally got it all finished, ruined it by killing the headstock with hamfisted attempt at woodworking to replace tuners. Devastated)
But yeah, until I killed the bass, it played beautifully, very smooth action and some of the best string-to-string evenness. Even talking about it's making me want to get another one!
I got mine shipped to Australia for ~$750 (for the 5-string version, mind), I imagine you would pay a similar price. I've since become enamoured with precisions, but if i were to go modern again, it'd probably be a brute.
^ never heard of Brubaker Brute before, will check ...
Were you already a fan of Delano?
I'm a Delano fan and I'm very interested in seeing what you finally think.
There does seem to be an atmosphere on TB of 'if it aint broke dont fix it', but I like tinkering for its sake, and often find things I didn't know I was missing. I completely understand what people are getting at, and I very much learned that with trying to replace the tuners, but I'm still happy to have done it, that destruction bred knowledge that I didn't have before.
I liked the sound of the brute stock, I just had an inkling that maybe it could be better, and when I put in the Basslines I was happy with the result. And Delanos are supposed to be even nicer, so I think it'll end up being a good move. Although having looked into Delanos before, 'the hybrid' wiring looks like a hell of a job; very versatile, just fiddly in the construction phase.
Wolffgang - I just traded my G&L tribute l-2000 for a brubaker brute. I am a music man player ( own 3 ) and love how the the brute feels and plays but hate all that boxy midrange it has akin to Ibanez, g&l, and lots of other basses I cant stand. Ive had it for a week and am already waiting for the Basslines Alinco musicman pickup to be delievered.
Im hoping to get more of that stingray like tone out of it...if that isnt enough im going to then try the basslines stingray pre-amp....god i hate throaty midrange..
