what sounds righteous in mahogany?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

are there any bass pickups (of any type, set-up, or brand) that sound good in mahogany bodies?

I play 80s speed metal and use a heavy pick on Rotosounds. I prefer a passive set-up.

thanks

All depends what kind of sound you personally think sounds righteous... everyone's tastes are different.

Sound or video examples usually help immensely to get suggestions.

Mahogany is a very dark sounding wood - I've had a few basses of this sort, and I have to say that I didn't like the sound. The wood seems to suck out the high-mids. I guess any p'up that was designed to compensate for that, perhaps like those used in old T-birds.

I have no experience with passive pickups in mahogany, but (despite their numerous detractors) the EMG-35HZs in my Schecter C-4 Elite sound FANTASTIC for clear, clean, aggressive modern sound with their associated 2-band pre.

The reason imo why some thinks that mahogany basses sound dark and dull is because of short scale basses like Gibson sg. I have a P-bass made of mahogany and its not dull sounding at all. I actually bet that you would not be able to tell the difference between that bass and one made of alder. Body wood has very little inpact on your sound. If anything at all.

I've got a single Nordstrand Big Split in my USACG/Warmoth J bass build and it sounds great. Very gutsy, super detailed, plenty of output. The Warmoth body is mahogany with a zebra wood top. The Big Split is a humbucker; it's low noise would be a good asset for high-gain tones.
