What would be the best Emg combination?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a custom 4 string Jackson bass that came with custom wound pick ups. I play Heavy Metal(Southern metal, progressive metal, and death metal) & my biggest influences are Les Claypool & Alex Webster. That being said in my bass lines I enjoy playing straight shred bass but I enjoy throwing some pops and slaps to change things up, but these pick ups that I have are to warm and bass driven. if I slap or pop it's more a thud than a crisp twang. If i turn up the treble to much I get to much attack and boosting or cutting mids doesn't help either.

What I'm wanting to do is basically gut my bass & change the pre-amp & pick ups w/ emg. I want to put a BQC pre-amp since mine doesn't have a mid control on it. The only thing I'm having an issue with is what 2 EMG 35's to throw in it. I was plannin on puttin a 35dc in bridge position & a 35j in neck but after reading some forum postings I'm startin to second guess that decision. Which Emg soap bar pick up combination would be best in ur opinion?

a pair of 35DCs will be all kinds of aggressive for metal, and will cut through big-time with slapping.

Obvious! Just look at what your players are using.. EMG DCs!

I've got a 35P in the neck and a 35DC in the bridge.. same kind of stuff here southern grinding death pop funk.

Just ordered a new bass with a pair of DCs - I rarely use that 35P and prefer the DC tone most of the time.

I'd get a 35P in the neck and a 35DC in the bridge. Then scrap the EMG preamp idea and put in an Aguilar OBP-3.

wow yea never thought of aguilar. the only thing I was afraid of was having to drill another hole in my bass, but on closer examination I see they make a pre-amp where i can still have 4 knobs with my volume, blend, and all 3 eq selectors. now with that though will I be able to just add in with my pre amp i have? i only ask cuz the way it looks. it's just a box that looks like all it does is control the eq section while i still have the same part that did my volume & blend.

the 35p's was somethin that was sittin in the back of my head since on my last jackson I had a set of emg split p pick ups and some emg dual coil pick up(honestly not sure what kind they were cuz they weren't MM style & definitely not soap bar) any ways the split p's is where I got most of my treble and when I would do solo's I would switch to those & they sound amazing. & I think that's really most of my pop & twang sound I'm lookin for was comin from. again when I had my spector euro lx 5 it was loaded w/ dual 40dc's and it still sound damn good when I would slap or pop.

If you buy an aggy pre-amp it replaces everything. I suggest buying it from best bass gear.
