What would be the effect of matching a 500k volume POT with 250K Volume and Tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently moded my jbass with a series/parallel switch. I dig it, but the push/pull POT I used is crappy. It is noisy when turned and has flimsy wobbly feel and is too easy to turn, (purchased on ebay). I have another (alpha I think) push/pull of greater quality but it is a 500k POT not a 250K pot like my other volume and tone POTs.

What would be the effect of having a 500k neck volume a 250k bridge volume and a 250k tone?

Sorry for ignorance, thank you for help.

The neck pickup would be brighter/hotter, and the bridge pickup would have less output relative to the neck.

The volume controls will be in parallel, so switching out one 250K to a 500K will also make the other one slightly hotter, as the resistance to ground is increased.

What effect does 1 meg pot have? Also, audio vs. linear
Passive basses and the volume control, an explanation (science warning)

Does brighter and hotter mean the same thing? So if I increase the resistance of the neck’s volume POT will it become louder or quieter in comparison to the bridge?

Thanks for the links.

Brighter= more treble. Hotter= more volume.

The greater the resistance the more output and treble.

if you didn't want that increase, put a 500k resistor across the two outer lug of that 500k pot and it will now be a 250k pot.

But then you start messing with the taper of the volume sweep.

true, but i've never noticed it to be a big enough difference to be a deal-breaker.
