What have you found to be your personal favorite J bass pickups and why? I've tried Suhr's and loved them. I've tried Duncun SJB-1's and loved them. I recently played a bass live that had Dimarzio model J's and those were killin. Best bargain out there for pickups. I'm not sure what's for me yet but these are the one's that have stood out so far. I'd like to try the Jason Lollar J's. I'd like to try the Duncun Antiquity pickups. What's your experience?

Personally my favorite J bass pickup pair I've ever heard is the stockers in my '97 USA passive Standard V. Close second, believe it or not, was the stockers in my '95 MIM. I replaced them with Basslines because the MIM Fenders had a bad rep back then, but the Fenders sounded better. I've still got one in a franken-PJ. The Barts in my old custom 4 string recorded much better than they sounded live, the Fenders sound perfect in every situation.

What did you find in those that you didn't feel you could get out of other J's? |

The one time I was comparing J pickups with a friend I found them to be very similar to Aero pickups, which for me are too clean. I personally prefer a J that gives a little when you dig in, that has a bit of that bark and bite if you push them. |

Compared to the stock Am. Ser. Fenders, they have deeper lows, slightly clearer highs, and, most importantly, more growl. They're pretty "raw" sounding, which I love. And the absence of single coil hum is a huge plus for me.
I've also been impressed with the Samarium Cobalt Noiseless in Fender's recent American Deluxe models. If I bought one of those, I'd leave the pickups stock.
